Please help support The Friends of Rotary Regional Library by voting daily in the Aviva Community Fund competition!

The Friends of the Rotary Regional Library have had a long history of volunteering to assist the library in its provision of programming and services. Through regular book sales and other fundraisers, The Friends provide funding to purchase programming materials and sponsor activities such as book clubs for adult and junior readers, Story Time for 3-5 year olds, Summer Reading Program, Baby Lap-Sit Program and author visits. Our group promotes the library in the community and advocates for improved library programs and services that benefit the community and surrounding areas.
The Summerside Rotary Regional Library Link  has become a vital component to the City of Summerside http://www.city.summerside.pe.ca/ With a population of just over 14,000 people, eleven thousand community members have library cards. In 2014 well over 80,000 visits were made to the current location at the former CN Rail train station. For a number of years, the library staff and the Friends of the Library have been looking to expand their programming and services to accommodate the divergent needs of the ever increasing patrons. Space constraints of the former railway station, which has housed the library since 1992, make this expansion impossible.
Recently the Rotary Club of Summerside Inc. purchased a building, in the heart of Downtown Summerside http://downtownsummerside.com , which has been named the Summerside Rotary Regional Community Learning Centre. The mission of this Centre is “to enhance the intellectual, social and cultural well-being of the residents of East Prince, and the economic development of the region”. The Rotary Regional Library will be relocated to an area in this new centre.
The move from the library’s current location (3,500 square feet) to a bright, spacious 7500+ square feet will enable the staff to greatly enhance the programming and activities at the Rotary Library. This expansion will provide many benefits to our “Great Small City” and surrounding communities. Various organizations serving our community have endorsed the new Community Learning Centre and the relocation of the Rotary Regional Library to that building. The list includes but is not exclusive to: PEI Literacy Alliance, East Prince Women’s Information Center, Island Nature Trust, East Prince Seniors’ Initiative, and the PEI Speech and Hearing Association.
The funding we are seeking through the Aviva Community Fund will go toward comfortable and accessible seating, shelving, and furnishings for patrons of all ages and physical abilities, play zones for toddlers and young children to encourage social interaction and exploration, and technology enhancements to support various literacy and learning opportunities.
In partnership with the Rotary Club of Summerside Inc., The Friends hopes to make the library in our new Rotary Regional Community Learning Centre the showcase library on Prince Edward Island. We are asking all Rotarians and all supporters of libraries, literacy, and lifelong learning to vote for the Friends of the Rotary Regional Library’s Aviva submission. Your continuous voting support will ensure enhanced programming and services for all library patrons and users in the new library facility.

Thank You!
